Friends of St. Columba’s Presbyterian Church,
Do Not Panic
Everyone has by now heard that Covid-19 has inevitably begun spreading across the globe.
We have 24 identified cases in South Africa now.
This is no reason to panic about this virus. We have had multiple new viruses over the last decade including SARS, H1N1, Ebola, Zuka, etc etc. “Corona” virus has a kill rate of 2.3% and this is relatively low compared with other recent viral outbreaks.
A lot of misinformation is doing the rounds, especially on social media.
It would be responsible to fact-check a meme you receive BEFORE just forwarding it to your entire contacts list. It would be irresponsible to forward non-factual info. Also be wary of forwarding joke-memes. To fact-check, always find the source of the information, like the National Institute for Communicable Diseases or the US agency CDC, or the WHO. If a meme is not referenced then it is probably better not to forward it along. Correct info is always referenced by the NICD or CDC or WHO.
A lot of the fake news also contains Sinophobia, so always think twice before forwarding.
Thus I want to encourage anyone who is feeling ill visit your doctor, especially with fevers, and flu symptoms.
Always cough into your elbow.
It is not necessary to use a face mask in public.
Avoid shaking hands as far as possible. Viruses are going to mean a behaviour change.
Carry a washable handkerchief if you develop a cough or sneezing.
We will no longer be holding hands for the Prayer for Africa.
I will no longer be at the door shaking hands before or after the Service.
WASH YOUR HANDS REGULARLY throughout the day. Hand-washing is our best defence aganst viruses and bacteria.
Carry a mobile pack of hand sanitiser
Together and with common sense behaviour change, we can protect ourselves.
With every blessing,
